Does the type of silvicultural practice influence spruce budworm defoliation of seedlings?

چکیده

Spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem)) is the main defoliator in boreal forest of North America, and its outbreaks have major ecological economic consequences represent a challenge for management. Numerous studies addressed effects this on mature trees, whereas spruce regeneration remain elusive. Furthermore, intensive exploitation practices during last decades left large area Canadian an early development stage. In context, it becomes vital to understand those factors affecting severity budworm-related defoliation regeneration. Here, we determine black balsam fir seedlings both pure spruce–balsam stands subjected two different silvicultural treatments (clear-cutting partial cutting). Defoliation intensity varied between stand types, treatments, species, height classes. Seedlings experienced twice (black 10% vs. 23%; 29% 47%, respectively). Harvesting methods also influenced seedling defoliation. Under clear-cutting, (24%) were three times as defoliated cutting (8%), clear-cutting plots (42%) (20%). The level increased with height. This study will help strategies adapt natural disturbance regimes. As are expected increase under climate change, these results guide management select harvesting that limit conifer

Western Spruce Budworm Defoliation Effects on Forest Structure and Potential Fire Behavior

Forest composition and structure on the eastern slope of the Cascade Mountains have been influenced by decades of fire exclusion. Multilayered canopies and high numbers of shade-tolerant true fir trees interact with western spruce budworm to alter forest structure and to affect potential fire behavior and effects. We compared measurements taken in 1992 (early budworm outbreak) and 2000 (late bu...

Entire solutions of the spruce budworm model

Here N is the spruce budworm population density, rB is the linear birth rate of the budworm and KB is the carrying capacity which is related to the density of foliage available on the trees. The P(N)-term represents predation, generally by birds. To be specific, we take the form for P(N) suggested by Ludwig et al., namely BN2 A2+N2 , where A and B are positive constants, and the dynamics of N(t...

Western Spruce Budworm Outbreak History

Western spruce budworm (Choristoneura occidentalis Freeman) outbreak history was reconstructed for the Sacramento Mountains of south -central New Mexico, at the southern limit of the species distribution range. Six host tree -ring width chronologies (Douglas -fir and white fir) and three non -host control chronologies (ponderosa pine) were used for this reconstruction spanning from 1800 to 1990...
